First off, I want to say hello to everyone, as I've been a member for about 30 minutes. Anyhow, I recently bought a house, and after hearing about FTA about 2 months ago, I spent a lot of time researching it, and bought a 31" dish...and a Sonicview 8000HD. I bought the SV not because I was trying to get encrypted channels, but because I had read some pretty good reviews about it. After two weeks of yelling, screaming and profuse amounts of profanities due to my seemingly professional ability to fail miserably at locating a true FTA bird, I have spent the last couple hours searching random strings of words on google. I came across a post about the 8000HD on this form where some folks mentioned that the box was useless for true FTA, and was solely created *just* for illegal means. So now I have a receiver I paid $175 for...am I basically out of luck with this, and would I be better off selling it on ebay and buying a more legal-friendly box, or is there something I can do with this that will make it work with true FTA that won't cost me a whole bunch more money?

It upsets me to know I may have made a useless purchase, however its even more upsetting to know that I may have spent the last 2 weeks in a terrible mood because my box just wasn't made for what I'm trying to do with it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. At this point, if there was anything I could do to pick up a legal FTA channel, no matter what channel, it would be such a huge moral victory for me. I'm just that beaten and baffled by this entire situation. Thanks in advance.

Go to evilbay & see if you can get a coolsat 5000 or 6000 cheap (ie. $50 or under shipped) or a coolsat 4000 (don't pay more than $30 shipped) and you'll have a good legal FTA box for cheap. The CS's are relatively easy to use and they give a good SD picture.

If you don't have a motor, simplify your life & get one. Hyper has a really good deal on one in the classified section. And I'd also get one of the site tools he's selling there to for $10 also if you have issues with trees or buildings on your property.

I cannot give you any great advice about whether to dispose your SV b/c I've never used one. I can say that there are several HD options for $250 & under for legal FTA. I'd be tempted to resell the SV because there'll probably be someone who will buy it now for less than legit reasons & you could reuse your dough to get yourself equipped for real fta without much additional cost.

The SV-8000HD does have some value in the FTA world if it is equipped with the factory bin. For one thing it is a HD receiver. I have never used one myself. It sounds like your dish is more for KU band. If you want to go all out with FTA you should get a big dish for c band. Some folks are giving them away to get them out of the yard! Then you will need a c/ku lnb. Do some searching on this site the answers are here. I don't know if the Sonicview receives S-2 or not. If it doesn't  a Solomend or Open box is the way to go. Hope this helps.

You can use it for some legal free to air but its not worth the effort in my opinion.

No support at all, sat list and transponder list way outdated, you have to get the piracy software off it, etc ...

And the main reason, you wont get legal free to air HD DVB-S2 on it, no matter what.

This is the same kind of thing as my nFusion HD. The nFusion will pick up FTA but I haven't seen any HD yet except for terrestrial. The ony redeeming feature is that it records HD from my terrestrial antenna or SD from the FTA satellite.

I haven't used the SV8000 , but I have a SV1000, 2 VS Ultras, and a VS Platinum. Unless they are bought used, they should not have any illegal firmware on them. They all come with a factory firmware that will work with true fta. I agree the support is no longer there for some brands but it is not hard to program in new sats or transponders. Coolsat and Pansat  are under scrutiny for being involved in the piracy world as well. These boxes can be a good deal if you can work with them since some folks only bought them for illicit purposes and don't know what else to do with them.

I differ with you I have a sv8000 hd and it will not get 8psk hd. So you may be getting some S2 Hd but not 8psk HD. Im sure you can not get the RTV mux on 87w C band. You also will not get the ABC networks on 95w C band as there 8psk HD.

I also have a SV8000HD and find it to be a pretty fair FTA receiver with 4.4.3 S/W.  True it wont do S2 8psk or 4.2.2 video but it does do H264 Mpeg4 just fine and has a decent blind scan and OTA tuner. The sat list can easily be modified by the user as I have done many times. I use a DVB receiver for those few TP it wont get and have a S9 HD on the way.

Hey I dont mean to be disrespctful you all are great alot more knowledge about about this than I but the orginal poster was new to FTA, he stated he couldnt get any Sats w/his SV8000 and was attributing his problem to the box and its simply not true he should be getting alot of feeds, his problem isnt his box, he's not/wasnt lined up properly.

Secondly give me a Ku DVB-S2-8PSK cordinate and see if I can get it my Sonic View 8000HD has DVB-S2-8PSK, Turbo QPSK, QPSK and DVB-QPSK scan options eveyrthing Ive found on FTA forums my box has been able to find unless its C-band as I dont have one yet.
